living in 2109

"the archetype of the room is the cube and the cube is made of six square sites. a square divided by a horizontal and a vertical line results in the perfect partitioning for window bars, the window cross. if you put squares together, as floor or wall panels, you'll get a grid. with that the world formula of architecture is defined, the archetypal principle from which everything evolves, the basic method of morphology. building is unfolding squares."

overpopulation is the main challenge of the year 2109. resulting in global shortage of water, food and resources. vast parts of earths surface are urbanized by more or less controlled housing and industrial development and by informal and uncontrolled use of open space.

the surface of the planet is covered almost completely by one interconnected city.

living-cubes, called the machines, were developed to accommodate the ever growing population. either like common buildings connected to the ground or as hovercrafts – levitated by an electromagnetic field. the levitation creates space on the ground.

the structures are made from ferroconcrete [prefabricated], various light metals to create the inner structure, and a synthetic textile that forms the outer layers. some small public places on the inside are provided with fresh air and sunlight on this way. the textile elements of the outer shell comparable with some kind of net, very light and flexible, with countless perforations. the textile cover protects the inner structure and defines the shape.

once the residents moved in the living cubes are completely self-sufficient. the used water gets purified and led back into the cycle. electricity is produced by huge inductors in the lower sectors. apart from the living quarters there is everything that makes a city, from hospitals to crematoriums. humans are born inside the machines, they visit scholl and work in the industrial areas, they wed, have children and die in the cubes. food is produced artificially or industrially.

without exception vast areas in the inside of the machines are artificially lighted, they are almost hermetical, provided with an oxygen processing plant. the people move with automatic transport between living and working quarters.

the only possibility to stop the loss of control is considered to be further constructions of living cubes. already 457 cubes are used exclusively as prisons, greatly exceeding anticipated capacities.

in the mediterranean region a living machine for over 1,8 million inhabitants is under construction since 2108 – expected completion 2112.
